The National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching
for the 21st Century has issued its report on improving the quality
of science and math teaching nationwide. The report, chaired by former
Senator and Astronaut John Glenn identified three goals for improving
mathematics and science education in the United States:

Establishing an ongoing system to improve the quality
of mathematics and science teaching in grades K-12.

Increasing the number of mathematics and science

Improving the working environment and make the teaching
profession more attractive for K-12 mathematics and science teachers.

. While the report recognizes the need for increased compensation for
mathematics and science teachers, it does not recommend using federal
dollars to supplement teacher salaries.
